Amihan April Mella-Alcazar: Applying Functional Literacy and Contextual Learning to English Language Teaching in Japan

Drawing on empirical research and her own experiences, Dr. Alcazar will suggest ways that the application of Functional Literacy and Contextual Learning can increase English language proficiency while helping teachers develop relevant, current and interesting classes for students in Japan. Participants in the discussion will be invited to explore the ways that their teaching methods compare to and may benefit from these two approaches.

About the speaker

In addition to her work as a lawyer in the Philippines, Dr. Alcazar has held Lecturer positions at the University of the Philippines M.B.A. Program, the Ateneo de Manila School of Management, and the International Academy of Management and Economics M.B.A. Program. Since 2006, she has been Adjunct Professor for International Business and Asian Business Systems at the Asian Institute of Management. Competent in several languages, Dr. Alcazar has advocated for better English language teaching in the Philippines through the collaboration of organizing seminars with the Philippine Department of Education.
